Metronome Minute: Ted Parvu
Metronome is led by some of the most respected names in cryptocurrency: Chief Architect, Jeff Garzik, Chairman and co-founder, Matthew Roszak, and Chief Cryptographer, Peter Vessenes. This series gives a brief profile on the talented team behind Metronome.
Ted Parvu is Metronome’s Infrastructure lead. He is a well experienced software information security engineer.
Q: Ted, who are you and what is your role on the Metronome team?
A: I’m an old school UNIX C hack and sysadmin, as well as a computer security, crypto-anarchist, privacy and open source advocate, and maybe a host of other labels. Outside of technology, I have a wide variety of skills and expertise. I have worked as a bear wrangler, fixer, outfitter, guide, and professional cook.
For Metronome I wear the hats of systems architect, information security, operations, and DevOps.
Q: What has excited you most about the Metronome project?
A: What excites me most about the Metronome project is getting to work with top talent in designing and applying the next generation cryptocurrency.
Once I read Satoshi’s White Paper, I was floored! He/she/they figured out the pieces of the puzzle the rest of us were never able to put together.
I really started to think about the possibilities for blockchain to change the fundamental power structures in our society, well I knew I had to be a part of this. Cryptocurrency is perhaps the most currently accessible aspect of blockchain and who better than the Bloq team to develop the next version of cryptocurrency?
Q: What has been the greatest challenge in bringing this new currency to life?
A: The greatest challenge? You like tough questions don’t you?
I suppose the greatest challenge is the pioneering aspect of it all. Sure, not at Satoshi’s level, but we are still creating something that hasn’t been done before. Everything is built upon the shoulders of those who came before us, of course, but we are also creating something very new and, I argue, very necessary. That’s hard, but that’s what also makes it so rewarding.
Q: What do you hope will be the most-used application for Metronome?
A: I have had a troubled relationship with money throughout my life. At one time, I wanted to be one of the top 0.1% and at another I spent close to a year trying to live without money. In that year I learned that barter is a lot of work and energy in and of itself. Now I understand that money is a tool, a technology, a means of exchanging time and energy.
It is my hope that Metronome will help usher in an era where money isn’t manipulated by a handful of oligarchs in a smoke filled room. A world in which everyone has a fair shot at “success” whatever your definition of success may be.
Q: Where will you be when the auction starts?
A: Right here in my office surrounded by screens monitoring everything. Unless, I lose connection, then I’ll grab my laptop and head to any number of backup locations depending on how widespread the outage is.
