Metronome Minute — Don Tapscott
In the Metronome Minute, we ask members of the Metronome team questions about their role, expertise, and what interests them about the project.
This edition features one of Metronome’s advisors: Don Tapscott, the CEO of the Tapscott Group and a leading voice on the impact of technology in business and social applications. Don and his son Alex founded the Blockchain Research Institute, which supports multiple research projects in the blockchain technology industry.
What is your role as a Metronome advisor?
As an advisor, I support the Metronome team with strategic guidance and support as they need it. I have a lot of experience in the space, and I use that expertise — those lessons learned — to help guide the Metronome team as we bring this new cryptocurrency to life. My role as an advisor also means I have examined Metronome in full and am confident in lending my voice in support of it.
What excites you most about Metronome?
First and foremost, the cryptocurrency is truly self-governing after launch. The experienced team is clearly committed to the principles of decentralization. The importance of having a strong team can’t be understated, but the point of blockchain is that you shouldn’t need to have faith solely in the organization, but the protocol itself. In fact, having to rely solely on a foundation or small group of developers almost betrays the decentralization ethos of cryptocurrencies. The commitment to self-governance says a lot about this team, and the confidence they have in what they’re building.
What do you think has been the greatest challenge in bringing this cryptocurrency to life?
Any new cryptocurrency worth its salt takes an enormous amount of work and preparation. Metronome’s commitment to self-governance means that there’s little room for error–in fact, there is only one chance to get it right. I think that kind of challenge demonstrates this team’s confidence in what they’re building and their commitment to the protocol, instead of an arbitrary date — this demonstrates the maturity of the team. It’s refreshing to see a project not have a presale or private sale, launching the public sale only when they are confident that the code is ready.
What do you hope will be the most-used application of Metronome?
Metronome’s portability across various chains means it can more easily overcome some of the challenges we’ve seen related to volatility and transaction speeds. That makes it especially useful for consumer payments, so I hope to see it applied there. Cryptocurrencies today are struggling to gain wider adoption because of these issues, and I hope that Metronome’s proposed solutions to these problems will help make day-to-day cryptocurrency use a more common occurrence.
